Waterford Township, MI: Man died after police shooting; update in last 5 hours.

A man died following an officer-involved shooting in Waterford Township, Michigan (Oakland County) after a police pursuit ended in a crash and confrontation with law enforcement on Thursday night.

According to Michigan State Police, the incident began when officers attempted to stop a vehicle connected to a fleeing suspect. The driver continued into a neighborhood near Williams Lake Road, where the vehicle eventually left the roadway and crashed into a wooded or marshy area.

When troopers and Waterford Township officers approached the vehicle, investigators say the suspect—identified as a 60-year-old man from Oakland County—refused commands to comply and allegedly displayed a handgun. Officers reported that the man pointed the weapon toward law enforcement, prompting multiple shots to be fired. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities confirmed:

  • No officers were injured

  • The scene has been secured

  • Multiple agencies are involved in the investigation, including MSP and the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office

  • Officers involved have been placed on administrative leave pending review

Officials have not released further identifying details or a confirmed motive, and the investigation remains active. They also stated there is no ongoing threat to the public.
