Saddle Road Accident Today: Fatal Crash Shuts Down Portions of Daniel K. Inouye Highway

A serious accident on Saddle Road, officially known as the Daniel K. Inouye Highway, caused major traffic disruptions and renewed safety concerns on Hawaii Island after a deadly crash involving multiple vehicles. Authorities confirmed that the collision occurred near mile marker 26, approximately two miles from the Mauna Kea Access Road intersection, leading to the temporary closure of the highway in both directions.

According to the Hawaii Police Department, the crash involved a head-on collision between a 2011 Toyota Corolla and a 2016 Hyundai Tucson. Investigators said the Toyota was traveling eastbound toward Hilo and attempting to pass another vehicle when it crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with the westbound SUV.

Authorities identified one of the victims as 70-year-old Todd Matsushita of Hilo. The second victim was later identified as 34-year-old Zachary Winston of Newport News, Virginia. Winston was treated by emergency crews at the scene but later died from his injuries, while Matsushita was found unresponsive and pronounced dead after being transported to a medical facility.

Police believe speed and reckless driving were contributing factors in the crash. The two-lane stretch of Saddle Road where the accident occurred carries a posted speed limit of 60 miles per hour, though residents and frequent travelers have long voiced concerns about dangerous driving behavior along the highway.

The crash forced officials to shut down sections of the roadway for several hours while investigators processed the scene and crews worked to clear debris. Traffic backups stretched for miles as motorists were advised to avoid the area and seek alternate routes. Authorities later reopened the highway after completing their initial investigation.

The incident has reignited public discussion about road safety on Saddle Road, which connects East and West Hawaii across the island’s interior. Residents have repeatedly raised concerns over speeding, unsafe passing maneuvers, and the dangers posed by long stretches of two-lane roadway. Some lawmakers have previously proposed lowering speed limits in certain areas, though efforts to change regulations have faced challenges.

Local officials say they plan to continue reviewing crash data and roadway conditions to determine whether additional safety measures may be necessary. Meanwhile, investigators are still examining all circumstances surrounding the collision, including vehicle speeds and driver actions leading up to the impact.

The tragedy marks another painful reminder of the risks faced by drivers traveling along Hawaii Island’s major highways. Community members have expressed condolences to the families affected while calling for increased awareness and caution behind the wheel.
