Investigators reported that a Jeep Grand Cherokee traveling eastbound crossed into the oncoming lane before gradually leaving the roadway and entering the north ditch. The vehicle then crashed violently into a power pole with such force that the pole was snapped in half, leaving behind a catastrophic scene.
Authorities said the Jeep eventually came to rest facing westbound with all four tires on the ground. Keyshawn Beckom, who was riding as a passenger, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The driver, identified as 24-year-old Lee Arthur Green of Duluth, survived the crash and was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening. Investigators stated that alcohol is believed to have been a contributing factor in the collision. Road conditions were reported to be dry at the time.
